Souvenir jackets (Sukajan) originated shortly after World War II, when U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan began embroidering their jackets with oriental motifs (eagles, tigers, dragons), their unit names, or the names of their bases as mementos of their time in the country. These were eventually commercialized as souvenirs and sold at various PXs (Post Exchanges—stores located within U.S. military bases).
At the time, the company supplying these souvenir jackets and other clothing to U.S. bases was Kosho & Co., the predecessor to Tailor Toyo (Toyo Enterprise). By the 1950s, when souvenir jacket production was at its peak, they accounted for 95% of the supply share. Having started as Kosho and continuing to produce souvenir jackets for over half a century, Tailor Toyo is the true original. They are not merely following a passing trend, but carrying on the Sukajan as a culture.
This piece is a custom order made by a U.S. soldier stationed at the port of Cam Ranh in southern Vietnam between 1965 and 1966. The back features a stylized panther face, making this specific embroidery motif extremely rare. Based on a highly unique vintage original, it features a Vietnamese landscape on the right chest, the three characters for "Fukurokuju" (Good Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity) on the left chest, and a dragon on the sleeves that is slightly larger than those on typical Vietnam jackets.
The rayon-blend cotton twill has been subjected to an aging process, recreating the faded color of the fabric and embroidery threads that comes with the passage of time. The supple fabric feel and drape are key features, allowing you to enjoy a vintage-like texture from the moment you wear it new.
