About the Brand and Product

SUGAR CANE SC29778 TWILL CHECK WORK SHIRT Green
SUGAR CANE. With a distinctly American name meaning “sugar cane,” this brand was the first postwar clothing manufacturer in Japan to make garments for the U.S. market.
TOYO ENTERPRISE COMPANY LTD., the parent company behind Sugar Cane, was founded in 1965 to serve people connected with U.S. military bases in Japan, as the United States began its full-scale involvement in the Vietnam War.
Initially, alongside manufacturing clothing for the U.S. military, the company also served as a domestic distribution channel for U.S. military surplus. When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, it transitioned into a clothing manufacturer focused entirely on the domestic market. At that time, it was named “SUGARCANE” by an officer stationed at a U.S. military base.
Though Sugar Cane was born in Japan, it grew by serving U.S. military bases, and its spirit and manufacturing know-how are rooted in America. From then until now, it has continued to make authentic workwear centered on denim, a material that is a symbol of American style.

Based on vintage pieces kept in Sugar Cane’s archive, this classic check shirt recreates details from the 1950s and ’60s, including two-needle chain stitching and construction details throughout. The pattern is based on work shirts from the 1960s by brands such as BIG YANK and BRENT, with four warp colors and four weft colors. The colors were selected from a slightly faded shirt, giving the fabric a naturally aged appearance.
A word from our staff
Ichimura / 175 cm / 75 kg / wearing size L

This SUGAR CANE work shirt features a subdued green-based check pattern and the natural texture unique to twill.
What I especially like is this wonderfully balanced color palette.
The check pattern combines several colors, centered around green, but it isn’t too flashy and has an atmosphere that brings to mind old American workwear.
The moderate weight and softness unique to twill are another great feature.
Since it doesn’t have a heavy brushed feel, you can enjoy wearing it from early fall through early spring, and it’s nice to watch the fabric gradually soften and settle in as you wear it.
Personally, I feel like pairing it with faded denim or wide-legged chinos for a slightly relaxed look.
It looks great worn open over a white T-shirt, and when the weather gets colder, it also works well as a layer under a chore coat or military jacket.
You never seem to get tired of wearing shirts like this, even years later.
A piece you can enjoy wearing casually every day, regardless of trends.
