City Lights Bookstore is a long-standing bookstore founded in San Francisco in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and it remains in operation today.
It is world-renowned as the epicenter of the "Beatnik" culture—a term collectively describing the activities of writers who emerged in the 1950s and 60s to reject and rebel against the social systems and values of the time—as well as the hippie culture that followed.
