BRAND & PRODUCT

About the Brand and Product

SUGAR CANE SC29798 Cotton Flannel Check Crazy Work Shirt

SUGAR CANE. With a distinctly American name meaning “sugar cane,” this brand was the first postwar Japanese clothing manufacturer to make apparel for the U.S. market.

TOYO ENTERPRISE COMPANY LTD., the parent company behind Sugar Cane, was established in 1965 to serve personnel connected with U.S. military bases in Japan, as the U.S. began its full-scale intervention in the Vietnam War.

Initially, alongside making clothing for the U.S. military, the company also served as a domestic outlet for U.S. military surplus. When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, it transitioned into a clothing manufacturer serving the domestic market exclusively. At that time, an officer stationed at a U.S. military base gave it the name “SUGARCANE.”

Although Sugar Cane was born in Japan, it grew by serving U.S. military bases, and its spirit and know-how in craftsmanship are rooted in America. From its early days to the present, it has continued to make authentic workwear centered on denim, a symbol of American style.

This work shirt features bold paneling across the front and combines four different check fabrics. Although made of cotton, brushing gives it a warm texture reminiscent of wool.

SUGAR CANE “Add Human Labor”

With “Add Human Labor” as its concept, Sugar Cane applies various treatments to its fabrics and adapts the materials and silhouettes without compromising the appeal of vintage workwear. The brand label proposes styles with “a little extra care.”

STAFF VOICE

A Few Words from Our Staff

Ichimura / 175 cm / 75 kg / wearing size L

I've loved check shirts for a long time, but this SUGAR CANE piece has a distinctive charm that's a little different from the usual flannel shirt.

The first thing that catches your eye is the crazy pattern, combining four different check fabrics.

The bold paneling across the front is especially striking. Although it uses different patterns, the overall look comes together in a surprisingly cohesive way.

Personally, I really like clothes with this kind of playful touch.

And the fabric's texture is wonderful, too.

Brushing the 100% cotton flannel gives it a warm, wool-like appearance.

It has a distinctly autumn and winter feel, yet it's also as easy to wear as you'd expect from cotton. That's another great thing about it.

Personally, I recommend pairing it with faded denim or wide-leg chinos for a slightly laid-back look.

The shirt itself has plenty of presence, so I think it looks best when the rest of the outfit is kept simple.

Of course, it's great not only worn on its own, but also casually layered over a T-shirt or worn under a solid-color jacket in winter, letting the pattern peek through.

I'm 175 cm tall and weigh 75 kg, and I'm wearing size L.

It honors the feel of vintage workwear while adding a touch of playfulness.

This piece captures the distinctive craftsmanship of SUGAR CANE.

Even if you usually wear solid-color or subtly patterned shirts, I hope you'll give this one a try. I think it's a wonderfully appealing flannel shirt that adds a little variety to your usual outfits.
